Fun Fact of the Day: Over the holiday weekend, L.A. Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw reached 100-strikeouts this season with a MLB record-low 5 walks! For some perspective on how insane that is, feast your eyes on this stat: 61 pitchers have walked 5+ batters in 1 game so far this season alone.
How the West was won. The Golden State Warriors rallied from a 3-1 deficit and the brink of elimination to defeat the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference finals. As per usual, Splash Brothers Steph Curry and Klay Thompson led the comeback charge. Next up. The Warriors will face the Cleveland Cavaliers in a rematch of last year’s NBA Finals. Will the Cavs get their revenge? Tune in Thursday for Game 1 to find out.
I love all my basketball children equally. In an interview over the weekend, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver again defended the NBA’s decision not to suspend Warriors star Draymond Green for kicking the Thunder’s Steven Adams in his family jewels. Many fans had speculated that the NBA had ruled in favor of Green to help the record-breaking 73-win Warriors get to the NBA Finals. Silver said Oh puh-leez to the conspiracy theorists and explained that the league doesn’t play favorites between teams. Or do they? It didn’t help his case that the NBA’s Facebook page briefly showed a schedule of the Golden State Warriors v. the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals, before the Western Conference finals were decided.
Stanley Cup debut spoiled. Last night, the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks (3-2) in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals. It was the Sharks’ first Stanley Cup Finals game in franchise history, and it wasn’t the beautiful, memorable night they had hoped it would be. The Penguins’ Nick Bonino scored the game-winning goal, after the Penguins nearly blew their early 2-goal lead. The Sharks will look to even the series in Game 2 on Wednesday.
Spanish showdown. Real Madrid took home their 11th UEFA Champions League title this weekend by defeating their cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid. Now, Atletico is having really bad flashbacks of that time they also lost to Real Madrid in the 2014 finals. The game was decided by penalty kicks, after the score was still tied at 1-goal apiece at the end of overtime. Superstar baller Cristiano Ronaldo scored the game winning penalty kick. Cue the shirtless celebration!
Wrist-y business. On Friday, 9-time French Open winner Rafael Nadal pulled out of the tournament because of severe wrist pain. As the King of Clay courts, Nadal loves loves loves competing at the French Open. He tried to stay in the contest for as long as possible by using painkilling injections before each match, but eventually he had to call it quits. Then no one else played either… Yesterday, all of the French Open matches were rained out for the first time in 16 years. Get ready for a lot of tennis crammed into the rest of the week.
A ridiculously good weekend for UNC and a ridiculously bad weekend for Maryland. Yesterday, both UNC’s men’s and women’s lacrosse teams beat Maryland’s teams to win the National Championships. This was particularly crazy upset for the UNC men’s team who entered the tournament unseeded. Meanwhile it was a completely tragic turn of events for the Maryland men, who lost their 2nd consecutive final and 4th in 6 years.
