Penn State Fans Get Angry

Fun Fact of the Day: This weekend, the New England Patriots’ Tom Brady secured his 201st win to become the winningest QB of all time. What is the only team in the NFL that he doesn’t have a winning record against? The Denver Broncos. Brady is 6-9 against them.

Today’s Rundown

The College Football Playoffs are set.  The results are in! The College Football Playoffs committee decided the top 4 teams that will duke it out in the playoffs this New Years Eve: #1 Alabama will be battling #4 Washington in the Peach Bowl; and #2 Clemson will take on #3 Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl.  Who got snubbed?  You might hear some grumbling by Penn State fans that think their team should have been picked over Ohio State. They kind of have a point. The committee ranked Penn State at #5 even though they upset Ohio State back in October, and this weekend they beat Wisconsin to win the Big Ten Championship. With a head-to-head win and the conference championship under their belt, some folks think Penn State was robbed.

Week 13 highlights:

  • Cam gets tied up.  The Seattle Seahawks trounced the Carolina Panthers 40-7. Everyone was confused when the Panthers briefly benched their star QB Cam Newton for the first play of the game. Instead, his backup Derek Anderson opened the game and immediately tossed an interception. Afterwards, Newton explained that he was penalized for violating the team dress code. The infraction? He didn’t wear a tie on the team’s flight to the game.
  • A Berry sweet ending.  The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Atlanta Falcons (29-28) thanks to a standout performance by their star safety Eric Berry. After an impressive pick-six in the first half, Berry also had the game-winning play with this interception turned defensive 2-point conversion. It was an emotional game for Berry, who was playing back in his hometown of Atlanta. Just 2 years ago he overcame Hodgkins lymphoma after receiving medical treatment from nearby Emory University.
  • This one is more of a lowlight… The least consequential game of the weekend was between the San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears. Both teams are way outside of playoff contention, so the outcome really didn’t matter (in case you’re curious, the Bears won). But the game was notable for how terribly 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick played. He was pulled out of the game in the 4th quarter, because he was a pathetic 1-of-5 for 4 yards with no touchdowns. Wowza.

And the participation trophy goes to…  This weekend Tiger Woods played in the Hero World Challenge. It was his first golf tournament in nearly 16 months, after recovering from 2 back surgeries. He didn’t exactly have a triumphant return to his former glory, but he did perfectly fine. And quite frankly everyone was just excited that he played 4 days of golf and didn’t injure himself. In the end, he finished 4-under-par for 15th place in the 17-man field.

Seen and Heard

Why? WHY? WHY?!?!?  This weekend it was leaked to the press that the L.A. Rams signed a 2-year extension with both their head coach Jeff Fisher and their general manager Les Snead. It turned out that the Rams signed the deal way back in the beginning of the season, but the timing of the announcement was pretty unfortunate. It was right before the Rams lost big to the New England Patriots 26-10, bringing their record to a dismal 4-8 this season. Rams fans were enraged, because the Rams haven’t broken a 7-8 season since Fisher and Snead joined the team 5 years ago. In fact, Fisher’s teams have lost 164 games throughout his 22-year coaching career, one loss away from the most in NFL history.

Indianapolis Colts (5-6) @ N.Y. Jets (3-8).  This is a must-win game for the Colts, who are sitting just 1 game behind the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans in the AFC South. Fortunately, the Colts should be getting back their star QB Andrew Luck, who sat out last week’s loss with a concussion. 8:30pm ET on ESPN
