Fun Fact of the Day: Since 2000, eight regular season MVPs have made it to the Super Bowl, including this year’s MVP Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan. Their combined record in the Super Bowl? 0-8.
NFL: SUPER BOWL LI EDITION
And the winner is… The New England Patriots beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in the first Super Bowl decided in overtime.
What did I miss? Oh just the Pats staging the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history. At one point in the 3rd quarter, the Falcons were up 28-3 and ESPN’s stats machine gave them a 98.9% chance of winning the game. It was such a snoozefest that President Trump left his own Super Bowl viewing party early.
The tables turn. Then the Pats did what they do best: execute. They scored 25 points to tie up the game, highlighted by this ridiculous catch by wide receiver Julian Edelman. The Pats also turned up their defensive jets, double and even at-times triple teaming the Falcons’ best receiver Julio Jones, but that didn’t stop Jones from making this insane sideline catch.
In the end… The Pats scored 31 unanswered points and took home the win in overtime, making this head coach Bill Belichick and QB Tom Brady’s 5th Super Bowl victory. To make the win even sweeter, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell had to hand them the Lombardi trophy to a chorus of boos by Pats fans that were still mad about his role in Deflategate. The Pats’ owner Robert Kraft also took some thinly veiled shots at Goodell in his speech, saying that “this [Super Bowl win] is unequivocally the sweetest” and “a lot has transpired during the last two years, and I don’t think that needs any explanation.”
Simply the best. Brady completed 43-of-62 passes for 466 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the biggest comeback of his career. Of course, Brady’s perfect life got even more perfect when he won the Super Bowl MVP and got a big smooch from his supermodel wife Gisele.
What’s next? The Falcons will have to go back to the drawing board, because offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is expected to take a head-coaching job with the San Francisco 49ers. Meanwhile, the Pats will get to party like rock stars back home. At some point this year, the team will make the requisite trip to visit the White House. That’s all well and good for Trump’s buddies, Belichick, Brady, and Kraft, but some other players like Martellus Bennett are already planning to skip.

Consolation prizes. The night before the Super Bowl, the NFL hands out honors in its annual awards show. Falcons QB Matt Ryan won the league MVP for his standout season and Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott won Rookie of the Year. Prescott brought his teammate and best buddy Ezekiel Elliott up to the stage with him and said he wished he could cut the trophy in half to split it with him.
