Fun Fact of the Day: Michael Phelps is headed to a record-tying 5th Olympics after winning 200m butterfly qualifier, yesterday! In total, Phelps has won a record-high 22 medals since the Athens 2004 Olympics. His 18 golds would rank 12th overall for all nations, ahead of traditional Olympic powerhouses like Romania, Poland, the Netherlands, Cuba and Spain.
It’s better to be rich than lucky. Yesterday, the Indianapolis Colts announced a monstrous deal to keep their star QB Andrew Luck. And we’re talking scary amounts of cash. The contract is for $140M over 6 years with $87M in guaranteed money, setting new NFL records. Why is he worth boatloads of coin? The Colts picked Luck from Stanford #1 in the 2012 NFL Draft, and he was dominant from the moment he stepped onto the field. He led the Colts to the playoffs in each of his first 3 seasons and slowly made Colts fans forget about their former QB –-some guy named Peyton Manning. A spell of bad luck. Unfortunately, Luck just had his worst season in his 4-year NFL career. He missed more than half of last season’s games because of injuries to his ribs, shoulder, and kidneys. Without him, the Colts didn’t stand a chance, missing the playoffs for the first time since Luck joined the team. No wonder they were willing to shell out a king’s ransom not to let him go.
Things that make you go ‘hmmm’… The Edmonton Oilers traded star Taylor Hall to the N.J. Devils in exchange for defenseman Adam Larsson. It’s not surprising that the Oilers would want to make a change. After all, they haven’t made the playoffs since 2006, and they have one of the worst defenses in the NHL. But it is super bizarre--and some would say, questionable--that they gave up their best player to improve their defense. Stamkos sweepstakes cancelled. Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Lightning’s star captain Steven Stamkos decided to sign a 8 year contract extension with the only team he’s ever known, instead of entering the free agency pool later this week.
A match made in advertising heaven. It’s not every day that an undrafted basketball player gets an endorsement deal, but former Kansas University power forward Perry Ellis just signed an ad contract with none other than… Perry Ellis—the moderately priced men’s clothing line. If you aren’t familiar with Perry Ellis (the player), let me assure you that it’s a perfect fit. The Twittersphere has been joking for ages that he looks suspiciously mature for a college player. Meanwhile Perry Ellis (again, the player) is not giving up on pro-ball just yet. He will try his luck in the Dallas Mavericks summer leagues.
