The One Where Messi Chokes

Fun Fact of the Day:  Of the 4 tennis Grand Slam events, Wimbledon is the only one that is held on grass courts. Somebody’s job is cut the grass to a height of exactly 8 mm during the tournament.

SOCCER

Making a real Messi of things. Last night, Chile defeated Argentina in penalty kicks for their 2nd straight Copa America championship! How did it happen?  Because of questionable officiating (*ahem* one ref in particular), a player was ejected from each team in the first half, and both teams had to play a man down the rest of the game. No one scored during regulation or extra time, so the game went to a penalty kick shootout. All eyes were on Argentina’s superstar Lionel Messi, who missed the opening shot and Chile's goalie later made a save to clinch the win for Chile. In the heat of the moment, Messi got emotional and said he’s quitting team Argentina. He probably just needs to take a minute to do some breathing exercises. After all, it can’t be easy to lose year-after-year with Argentina (they’re in a 23-year drought), when he’s used to the success of his Barcelona football club in the Spanish League.

MLB

Back to being lovable losers?  It happened!  The Chicago Cubs have been knocked from the top of the baseball standings, folks!  Both the Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants have passed them with 49-wins each.  It’s been a rough week for the Cubs, who have lost 6 of their last 7 games, including a rare 3-game sweep at home by the St. Louis Cardinals.  OK, it may not time to ring the alarm bells quite yet.  The Cubs are still 22 games above .500 and have easier opponents (I’m looking at you Cincinnati Reds) coming up in the schedule soon.
