Fun Fact of the Day: Last night, right fielder Mookie Betts became the first Red Sox player to ever hit 3 home runs from the leadoff position (psst—“leadoff” means he was batting first). The Red Sox went on to beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-2.
All good things must come to an end. Last night, the Chicago Cubs lost to the L.A. Dodgers (5-0), ending the Cubs' 23-game winning streak with ace Jake Arrieta as their starting pitcher. But don’t blame Arrieta! He kept the Dodgers scoreless through 7 innings, until relievers Clayton Richard and later Travor Cahill took the mound. Dodgers pitcher Scott Kazmir rose to the occasion and went toe-to-toe with Arrieta, allowing only 1 hit all game.
Careful, it’s a long way down. Earlier this year, the Cleveland Cavaliers surprised everyone by firing their head coach David Blatt. Why the surprise? At the time, the Cavs had the best record in the East and they went to the NBA Finals last year. Blatt probably wasn’t too worried about finding another gig, because of his baller record. But after interviewing around the NBA for the past few months, he’s reportedly heading overseas to take a job coaching in Turkey. Home-sweet-home? Blatt previously coached for 21 years in Europe and won numerous coaching awards there. At least Blatt’s European friends will appreciate him, unlike the Cavs players who reportedly thought he was just an NBA newbie.
Spotlight on Kevin Durant
Just minutes after the Oklahoma City Thunder were eliminated from the NBA playoffs on Monday, superstar Kevin Durant was asked where he’s going next. That’s right, folks! KD’s now officially a free agent and he’s the most beautiful belle at the ball.
What makes him so desirable? KD is a scoring machine. He won league MVP in 2014 and has won the league scoring title 4 times. Durant’s known for his crazy 7’4” wingspan that helps him shoot over defenders. The fact that he’s also secretly super tall is also a big help. Durant is listed as 6’9”, but recently he confessed that he’s actually 6’11”. Why’s he been lying to us? Growing up KD was tall for a small forward so he lied about his height to avoid getting typecast into playing power forward. Typically, small forwards are shorter, quicker, and more versatile players.
Now, everyone wants a piece of that sweet KD action. Seriously everyone. Check out this compilation of all the teams that are trying to win the KD lottery. Most teams don’t stand a chance, because KD will probably only switch to try to join a Championship contender like the Golden State Warriors or San Antonio Spurs.
He’s likely to stay put. Durant has spent his entire 9-year career with the Thunder and he really wants to bring them a championship ring. Sports insiders think that Durant will sign a 1 or 2-year contract extension with the Thunder, so that he can give it 1 more try. A short contract has 2 more perks: (1) the salary cap goes up next year so he can get more of that cash-money, and (2) he can leave the Thunder at the same time as his superstar teammate Russell Westbrook, whose contract expires next year.
