Fun Fact of the Day: Last night, Ohio State had 5 players picked in the 1st round of the NFL draft, tying the 2nd most of all time. Three of the players were drafted in the top-10.
NBA: Round 1 of the NBA playoffs roll on.
Hot-lanta advances. Last night, the Atlanta Hawks beat the Boston Celtics (104-92). The Celtics were ice-cold, shooting for just 36% from the field during the game. Next up the Hawks will face the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2nd round.
NHL: Round 2 begins.
Great expectations met. Hockey fans were amped to see the Washington Capitals take on the Pittsburgh Penguins and the teams did not disappoint in last night’s fast-paced game 1 of the series. The Caps beat the Penguins 4-3 in overtime, thanks to a hat trick of goals from Caps T.J. Oshie. Oshie’s wraparound game-winning goal barely crossed the line, but was verified by video replay.
Golly Dee Whiz. Miami Marlins 2B Dee Gordon has been suspended 80 games without pay for testing positive for PEDs. Last year, Gordon won the National League batting title. I wonder where he got that idea… This year, the Marlins hired hitting coach Barry Bonds, who was suspected of steroid use as a player.
Spotlight on the NFL Draft
The 1st round of the NFL draft was last night! As usual, the event had glitz and glamour, “progressive” fashion choices, and a chorus of boos for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Here is your cheatsheet from last night:
Who went first? As expected, the draft’s top 2 picks were QBs. Cal’s Jared Goff went #1 to the L.A. Rams, and North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz went #2 to the Philadelphia Eagles. Can you live up to the hype? While most people agree that these were the 2 best QBs in the draft, both players have big weaknesses. Goff has no running game and itty-bitty hands, while Wentz has mediocre completion % and yards/completion.
Whose stock dropped? Ole Miss offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil was one of the highest-rated prospects, but dropped down to #13 because of a recently tweeted video that showed him smoking marijuana in a gas mask. He already wasn’t perfect. He is also facing legal trouble for a domestic incident against his step-father and an NCAA investigation for receiving improper benefits (loaner cars and cash).
Who didn’t get a turn? The New England Patriots, who lost their 1st round draft pick due to all that Deflategate madness.
Who made bad picks? People are already speculating, but only time will tell which players transition well to the pros. There are always top college players that crash and burn and diamonds in the rough that are overlooked. Of course, one prime example is New England Patriots QB Tom Brady who was a 6th round pick in the 2000 draft.
Seen and Heard
Are you sure you want to play this game of chicken? QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and the N.Y. Jets are still in the middle of a negotiating stalemate. Now, Fitzpatrick has said that he’d rather not play at all than take the $7-8M/year that the Jets offered him. Does he deserve more dough? Last season, Fitzpatrick had the best year of his career, throwing for 31 touchdowns and 3,905 yards, but his teams have never made it to the playoffs in his entire 11-year career. That said, other unproven QBs seems to be picking up a big fat contracts, so he’s probably wondering “Why not me?”
