How do you solve a problem like Maria? Yesterday, Maria Sharapova announced that she tested positive for Meldonium. And that is… ? It’s a drug that increases blood flow and was banned at the beginning of this year because athletes were using it to increase their endurance. What did Maria have to say? Oops, it was banned?! She said she’s been taking the drug for 10 years for off-and-on for a magnesium deficiency and to combat diabetes, which runs in her family. What happens now? Maria is out of the game right now because she has a forearm injury, but there could be additional punishment coming down the pike from the Women’s Tennis Association. Stay tuned!
See ya never, Philly. Running back DeMarco Murray was traded from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Tennesee Titans. He was looking get the heck out of Philly, after being super unhappy last season. Why so glum? Two years ago Murray was the NFL’s rushing yard leader for the Dallas Cowboys. He was traded to the Eagles last season, but he did not like working for head coach Chip Kelly and it showed in his performance. But wait, isn’t Kelly gone? Kelly was fired at the end of last season and is going to be the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. But like any bad breakup it looks like Murray wanted to have a completely fresh start.
Spotlight on a Really Mad March Madness
March Madness starts next week, which means you’ve got to start thinking about your bracket pretty soon. You might as well pick based on the best mascots or your favorite colors, because this year is going to be completely unpredictable!
What do you mean? There are no clear favorites to win this year. There have been 6 different teams that have been ranked #1 this season (for some perspective, only 2 teams held the top spot last year), and no team has been able to hold onto it for longer than 4 weeks. All the teams look pretty equal, which should make for some really exciting games and lots of upsets!
The math backs it up. The whiz kids over at FiveThirtyEight said the favorite team usually starts the tournament a 20-25% chance to win it all. But this year it looks like the top-favored teams only have 12% chance of winning. It’s anyone’s game, folks!
Seen and Heard
O, I was just cutting an onion… Yesterday, legendary QB Peyton Manning held a press conference to announce his retirement. He has more records than we can count on our fingers and toes, and he reminded us that it was all because of his meticulous preparation. He thanked his coaches, teammates, opponents, family, fans, and most of all football. We reminisced, we laughed, we cried… mostly we cried. Read or watch the whole moving speech here. Omaha!
A new touchdown dance? Pittsburgh Steelers Antonio Brown is known as one of the best wide receivers in the game today. This off-season he’s trading in his cleats for dancing shoes to compete on Dancing with the Stars. Big dancing shoes to fill. NFL players have done really well on the show, including past winners Hines Ward, Emmitt Smith, and Donald Driver. It’s a dance off!! Brown’s got stiff competition this season, including Denver Broncos defensive end and Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller. The Broncos got the best of the Steelers during the playoffs… but who’s got the better cha-cha?
