Fun Fact of the Day: Wilt Chamberlain is the only NBA player to ever record 40+ points and 40+ rebounds in a game. And he did it 8 times.
That’s so Raven! QB Joe Flacco signed up for a 3-year extension with the Baltimore Ravens. He’s played for the team his entire 8-year career and with this new deal he’ll be there until 2021. What should I know about Flacco? He’s known for his strong arm and the fact that he does not disappoint in the postseason. He is the only QB to have won a playoff game in his first 5 seasons in the NFL and he has one Super Bowl MVP under his belt. Really? I know, sometimes it’s hard to remember the good times because the Ravens were so horrendous last year. They suffered injuries left and right, including Flacco’s own season-ending ACL tear.
The Secret World of Alex Mack. Cleveland Browns center Alex Mack is opting out of the last 3 years of his contract to enter free agency. He’s a 3x time Pro Bowler and used to be the highest paid center in the league. While he hasn’t ruled out renegotiating a deal with the Browns, you can bet he’ll ask for a boatload of cash to return.
Spotlight on Maryland
Here’s our spotlight on Maryland so you know what to watch for in tonight’s game against Illinois and as you fill out your bracket next week!
What’s up with Maryland? Maryland is in a bit of a slump and it’s not great timing with March Madness less than 2 weeks away. They lost 3 of their past 4 games and fell out of the top 10 rankings for the first time this season. What’s the problem? They are getting out rebounded by their opponents and are having trouble on defense.
What’s the good news? Maryland has impressive and accurate shooters that hit 56.6% from 2-point range (7th highest in the country).
Who should I watch out for? Sophomore Melo Trimble is the team’s leading scorer, but recently he’s been in a slump after returning from a hamstring injury. He really needs to get his groove back because the rest of the team is counting on him. He is the team’s major playmaker, dishing out the ball to teammates Diamond Stone, Robert Carter, and senior Rasheed Sulaimon (who transferred to Maryland after being dismissed by Duke).
Seen and Heard
Not Babe! Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes bought a prize-winning pig for $7K at a Florida county fair last weekend. According to state law, the pig can’t be kept as a pet. Yes, you guessed what that means. PETA wasn’t happy either.
Getting swole. At the end of the NFL season, the Green Bay Packers head coach pointed out that running back Eddie Lacy was getting a little chubs and could afford to lose a few LBs. Lacy’s first two seasons with the Packers were fantastic, but this past season he came back with a little more “padding” and ankle, groin, and rib injuries. After those harsh words from my boss, I would be shame-eating my feelings, but it looks like Lacy took it as constructive criticism. He’s been training with the P90X creator and already slimming down.
Golden State Warriors v. Oklahoma City Thunder. Tonight is the last time these two top teams will meet in the regular season. The Thunder will be looking for payback after this weekend’s epic overtime loss, but Kevin Durant doesn’t think things look too good for them after blowing a 22-point lead to the LA Clippers last night. If the Warriors win tonight, they could tie the Bulls 1995-1996 record of 44 straight wins at home. The game may come down to whether Steph Curry is back on the court after rolling his ankle during last weekend’s game.
