The One You Should Select

Fun Fact of the Day:  Earlier this week Holy Cross defeated Lehigh to make it to the Big Dance.  It was a big surprise, because Holy Cross has a losing record this season (14-19).  The last time a 19-loss team won a game in the Tournament was 1955, so probably don’t pick them as one of your upsets…

Today's Rundown

Slow down, please.  Yesterday, Duke lost to Notre Dame in overtime, in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals (84-79).  Notre Dame may be Duke’s kryptonite, because they have lost 5 of their last 6 meetings with the Fighting Irish.  Why’d Duke lose?  They were so tiiiiired. Even though they have amazing scorers in Brandon Ingram and Grayson Allen, Duke doesn’t have many bench players they can rely on.  That means their thin rotation of players doesn’t get to rest.  It didn’t help that this was their 2nd game in 2 days or that most of their best players were in foul trouble throughout the game.  Next up?  Don’t worry, Duke’s record will still get them to the Big Dance.  Meanwhile Notre Dame will face UNC in the semifinals today!

Spotlight on the Best March Madness Coaches

With March Madness beginning next week, everyone is looking for that edge to help their bracket win!  Today’s Goalposte tip is to take a look at the best Tournament coaches.

Who’s at the top?  Last year, the whiz kids over at FiveThirtyEight analyzed which coaches exceed expectations in the Tournament.  Their favorite coach was Tom Izzo (Michigan State)!  And lookie-here, they are one of the favorites to win it all this year, too!  Who else is on the list?  There were the usual suspects like John Calipari (Kentucky), Coach K (Duke), and Roy Williams (UNC).

But how can I show off and win big?  Psst—these are the other coaches that are usually good bets that others might not expect:  Steve Fisher (San Diego State), Sean Miller (Arizona), and Archie Miller (Dayton).  Shhh!

Seen and Heard

Don’t bite the hand that feeds you…  Yesterday, Washington Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper called baseball a “tired sport.” Ya, it’s the sport he plays… At age 23, Harper’s one of the bright young stars in baseball and was the National League MVP last year.  As a millennial… He thinks that MLB could get more fans by focusing on young baseball stars with big personalities like basketball and football do.  #awkward
