The One Where We Crave Cheddar Bay Biscuits

Fun Fact of the Day:  Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi scored his 300th and 301st La Liga career goals yesterday (La Liga is Spain’s premier soccer league). The next closest player that is currently in the game is Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, but he’s got a long way to go to catch up.  He has 246 goals.

Today's Rundown

#20 Duke beat archrival #5 UNC (74-73)This game came down to the last seconds of the game when UNC missed its final shot.  Who’s to blame?  UNC coach Roy Williams said my bad.  He should have called a timeout during the last possession.  This was a huge win for Duke. This makes this their 4th straight win against UNC. After a really rough January, Duke has won 5 straight games and is rising back up in the rankings, after dropping out of the top 25 for the first time in 10 years.  Trouble ahead.  Duke’s starting guard Matt Jones went out of the game with an ankle injury.  On top of Amile Jefferson who has been out since January, Duke is looking pretty short-handedWho can UNC commiserate with?  #15 Dayton, #3 Oklahoma, and #4 Iowa who both lost to unranked teams last night.

Time to pick up bridge? Shuffleboard?  29-year-old LB Jerod Mayo is retiring after 8 years playing with the Patriots.  He had a bunch of injuries in the past few years, but was still the 2nd highest paid player on the team behind QB Tom Brady.  Yea, that’s not the best combo…  Many thought Mayo would be traded, so maybe he was trying to avoid the inevitable.  Can I retire now, too?  This is another high-profile young retirement after wide receiver Calvin Johnson and running back Marshawn Lynch earlier this year.  Some think this might have to do with football’s dangerous rep and growing player injuries.

Spotlight on UNC

Despite last night’s loss, UNC is going to be one of the top-ranked teams going into the March Madness. What’s that, you don’t know anything about UNC?  Well, you better study up so you don’t get pranked like these kids.  Here are your UNC cliff notes so you know what to watch out for next month:

What are their strengths?  UNC has the most points per game in the ACC, thanks to leading scorers Brice Johnson and Marcus Paige.   Both are seniors so you can bet that they will be playing their hearts out all tournament long.  UNC also has a bunch of crazy tall players with Brice Johnson, Kennedy Meeks, and Isaiah Hicks all in the 6’9” range.  All this height makes them incredible at rebounding and driving to the basket.

What are their weaknesses?  Unlike the general trend in basketball towards shooting 3-pointers, UNC has attempted some of the fewest 3-point shots in the ACC.  That’s probably a good thing, because UNC has the lowest 3-point percentage in the conference.  But didn’t you say they score the most points per game in the ACC?  Yes!  They score most of their points in the paint, taking advantage of all those tall ballers.

Down on one kneeWho doesn’t love an engagement story with lots of flowers and an elaborate choreographed dance?  This was not one of those.  Green Bay Packers wide receiver James Jones said he proposed to his wife by hiding the engagement ring in a basket of cheddar bay biscuits at Red Lobster.  To be fair, those biscuits are unreal.  Jones sure knows the way to a woman’s heart.

Don’t wrong Williams.  Yesterday, Pittsburgh Steelers running back DeAngelo Williams took to Twitter Mean Girls-style to talk trash about the New England Patriots, including calling them cheaters and saying that no one likes Pats coach Bill Belichick.  What’s the beef?   He's still mad that the Pats didn’t draft him… 10 years ago.  Let this be a lesson to you: Williams holds a grudge.
