The One Where We Start Prepping for March Madness

Fun Fact of the Day:  The NBA All-Star Game is this weekend! It’s a fun and fast-paced exhibition game, where all the best players showcase their b-ball skillz.  One skill they don’t worry about?  Defense.  The past two years the winning team scored a record-high 163-points—the East in 2014 and the West in 2015.

Today's Rundown

Ugliness off the field. Yesterday, 6 women sued the University of Tennessee alleging biased procedures that favored student athletes in sexual assault incidents. One account said that a football player who helped a victim was later beat up by his teammates with athletic coaches looking on.  You’ll be hearing more about these allegations this summer, when two former-Tennessee football players face rape trials.

Shutting down the streak.  Last night the NY Rangers shutout the Pittsburgh Penguins with a 3-0 victory.  Who was the MVP of the game?  Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist who was stopping shots left and right.  With this win he’s passed Martin Brodeur for most wins by a goalie in his first 11 seasons in the league.  Who’s not happy?  Penguins Sidney “Sid the Kid” CrosbyHe started this season in a slump, but after the All-Star break he got red-hot with a personal best 7 game goal-scoring streak.  The Rangers just took care of that.  What else should I know about Sid?  He was the 1st NHL draft pick in 2005 and did not disappoint.  He led the Penguins to a Stanley Cup in 2010 and recently passed his 900-point as the 10th fastest player to do so, even though he sat out much of 2011 with concussions.  He’s known for having one of the best backhand shots in the league.

Spotlight on the Duke Blue Devils
It’s almost Valentine’s Day, which means love is in the air and March Madness is only a month away!  Over the next few weeks we’ll try and spotlight the teams and players to watch so you are prepped for the Big Dance.

Let’s start with Duke!  You know Duke as the college basketball behemoth that everyone loves to hate.  They won the tournament last year and they have won 5 college Championships since 1991.

Or maybe we shouldn’t start with Duke…  Duke is in a bit of trouble this season.  This is the first time in 8 years that they have been ranked outside the Top 25.  But things are looking slightly better, because they just won their first game against a ranked team this past weekend.

What’s up with all this losing?  Center Amile Jefferson has been out since January with a broken foot.  They really need him back to help with their defense (ranked all the way down to 149th in the nation) and for his leadership abilities as one of the few seniors on the team.  Too bad we have no idea when he’s expected to return.

So what should I watch out for?  Check out star small forward Brandon Ingram, who is a serious scoring threat.  He’s only a freshman and he’s expected to be a top 3 NBA draft prospect.  If you’re a Duke hater, lookout for Grayson Allen who is the next big Duke villain.  What makes him so hate-able?  Just check out this move where he tripped a Louisville player last weekend.

A very good athlete.  Not only did Bernie Sanders win the New Hampshire primary, he also won on the court when he sank basket after basket at the gym before delivering his victory speech Monday night.  When asked about his athletic prowess, Bernie said he was a “very good athlete” but not a “great one.”  #hesheatingup #feelthebern

An unorthodox remedy.  **If you don’t want to be grossed out, probably stop reading now**  Yesterday former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson (of Dancing with the Stars fame) said he used to cure his sprained ankles by soaking them in warm urine that he collected from his teammates. Ew. Ew. Ew. Shudder. Shudder.
