That Other Chicago Team

Fun Fact of the Day: The Chicago Cubs are trying to end their 108-year championship drought, but they are down 2-3 in the World Series and playing their last 2 games on the road in Cleveland. Historically, teams in their position have won the World Series only 21.3% of the time.

Today’s Rundown

Jay Cutler’s return.  Last night, the Chicago Bears upset the Minnesota Vikings 20-10. After sitting out the past 5 weeks with a thumb injury, controversial Bears QB Jay Cutler (aka Mr. Kristin Cavallari) made his triumphant return. Jay has long been hated by football fans for a whole host of reasons: he’s uncoachable, he looks disinterested in the game, he chokes, he’s soft, the list goes on and on… But last night, he managed to move the ball against one of the best defenses in the league with a little help from running back Jordan Howard and wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey.

Seen and Heard

Fire sale on linebackers. The New England Patriots surprised everyone by trading away one of their best defensive players, linebacker Jamie Collins to the Cleveland Browns. Why?  After this season, Collins is going to be a free agent and rumor has it that the Pats didn’t want to pay him the big bucks to stick around. But the trade was still super confusing for a couple of reasons: (1) the Pats basically gave him up for free—all they got in return was a conditional third-round draft pick; and (2) the Pats are in the middle of a stellar 7-1 season, so it seems a little weird to give him away before a possible Super Bowl run. It’s the Patriots way… Regardless, it’s probably not a great idea to doubt coach Bill Belichick, who is known for having personnel ESP and getting rid of players just before they start to decline.

An Irish goodbye. Tennessee Titans wide receiver Andre Johnson quietly retired yesterday after 14 seasons in the NFL. He spent most of his career playing for the Houston Texans, where he set a bunch of franchise records. He wasn’t a very flashy player per se, but he racked up some Hall of Fame worthy stats, including top 10 all-time career receptions and receiving yards.

Meet the new Oklahoma City Thunder. OKC signed big 4-year contract extensions with Victor Oladipo and Steven Adams. Together with superstar Russell Westbrook, they will form the core of the Thunder. After a PTSD-inducing summer where they lost Kevin Durant to the Golden State Warriors in free agency, you can understand why the Thunder wanted to lock up these key players.

Josh Tomlin will be starting for the Indians on short rest and ace Jake Arrieta will start for the Cubs. Even though Arrieta helped earn a win for the Cubs in Game 2, he’s been a little inconsistent during this postseason. Fortunately, the Cubs will get an offensive boost from DH Kyle Schwarber, who has been the comeback kid of this World Series after tearing both his ACL and LCL in April. 8pm ET on FOX
