Cleveland Wins the ALCS!

Fun Fact of the Day:  NHL rookies are off to a hot start. Last night, the Winnipeg Jets rookie Patrik Laine scored a hat trick, including the game-winning goal to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs. Laine was picked #2 in the NHL draft, right behind the Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews who scored 4 goals in his NHL debut last week.

Today’s Rundown

ALCS: The Cleveland Indians are headed to the World Series!  The Indians beat the Toronto Blue Jays to win the ALCS 4-1, and Cleveland’s star relief pitcher Andrew Miller was named the ALCS MVP. Before the game, there were super low expectations for Cleveland’s rookie starting pitcher, Ryan Merritt because this was only his 2nd start in the majors. But the newbie managed to deliver a calm, cool, and collected performance. Next up, the Indians will make their first World Series appearance since 1997 against the winner of the NLCS.

NLCS: Chicago Cubs end their slump.  After getting shut out in the previous 2 games, the Cubs caught fire and beat the Los Angeles Dodgers last night 10-2. The series is now tied at 2 wins apiece. After the game, Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez was still fired up about a controversial call in the 2nd inning. He was called out at home plate even though some photos seem to show he was safe.

Seen and Heard

Coming up Roses. A jury in a civil lawsuit cleared New York Knicks star Derrick Rose and 2 of his friends of sexual assault. One of Rose’s ex-girlfriends had sued them for $21.5M, claiming that they gang-raped her while she was unconscious and intoxicated. Despite the favorable verdict, Rose and his friends aren’t completely in the clear yet. They are still being investigated by the L.A.P.D. to determine if criminal charges should be filed.

Geno take 2.  Geno Smith is back to being the NY Jet’s starting QB. The Jets have an abysmal 1-5 record to start the season, so they thought it was time to change things up and move away from former starting QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. Earlier this week, they benched Fitzpatrick midgame, after he threw his 11th interception of the season. Even though a change at QB can’t really hurt, Geno’s probably not the solution to all the Jets’ problems. He had an unimpressive 11-18 record before Fitzpatrick took over, and he might not have the best chemistry with the team. In case you forgot, Fitzpatrick stepped into the QB1 role last season because then-teammate IK Enemkpali punched Geno in the face and broke his jaw.

A Burfict storm. Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict was fined $75,000 for stomping on New England Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount, during last week’s game. Even though Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said he didn’t do anything wrong, the league is extra careful when it comes to Burfict. After all, he has a long history of unsportsmanlike conduct and player safety violations; he’s been charged the most fines of any player since 2012 and served a 3-game suspension this season for repeated rules violations.
