The Cubs' Comeback

Fun Fact of the Day: Yesterday, LSU’s live tiger mascot Mike VI was euthanized because of an inoperable tumor. While LSU’s past 3 mascots have been donated from rescue facilities, the original Mike the Tiger was purchased in 1935 from the Little Rock Zoo for $750. They raised the funds by collecting 25 cents from each student.

MLB Playoffs highlights:

  • The Chicago Cubs advance to the NLCS!  Last night, the Cubs staged an epic comeback to beat the San Francisco Giants 6-5. At the start of 9th inning, the Giants were up 5-2, and everyone was pretty sure we were headed to a Game 5. Then over the next 5 relief pitchers, the Cubs miraculously managed to score 4 runs, eliminating the Giants and ending their even-year World Series streak at 2010, 2012, and 2014.
  • The L.A. Dodgers force a Game 5. The Dodgers beat the Washington Nationals (6-5) to avoid elimination and tie up the series 2-2. After a shaky start, Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw put together another impressive performance and 2B Chase Utley hit a single in the 8th inning to drive in the go-ahead run for the Dodgers. Next up the teams head back to D.C. for the final game of the series, where the Dodgers will face Nats ace and NL Cy Young Award favorite, Max Scherzer.

Seen and Heard

NFL

“We want Kap!”  At the end of last week’s loss, San Francisco 49ers fans were chanting “We want Kap!” It looks like they got their wish. After an abysmal 1-4 record to start the season, the 49ers announced that Colin Kaepernick will be QB1 in this week’s game against the Buffalo Bills. Hopefully, Kap will be able to jumpstart their offense, which is ranked 31st in the NFL in yards per game.  I’m confused… wasn’t he always playing?  Kap used to be the 49ers starting QB and even took them to a Super Bowl once upon a time, but he has been sitting on the bench since he injured his shoulder last year. His name is probably ringing bells because of his controversial national anthem protest against social injustice. Everyone had an opinion, including Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg—SPOILER ALERT: she thought it was “dumb.”

MMA

From violent to more violent?  Former NFL defensive end Greg Hardy announced that he’s hoping to start a career in MMA. You probably remember Hardy for accusations that he abused his ex-girlfriend and threw her on a futon covered in assault rifles. Even though charges were dropped, Deadspin published graphic photos of the victim’s cuts and bruises. Surprise, surprise no one in the NFL wanted to pick him up as a free agent.  Someone else who might be entering a ring near you?  Pop star Demi Lovato is reportedly anxious to have her first fight when she takes a break from singing next year.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Steak at stake.  This past weekend the Ann Arbor location of the Ruth’s Chris steakhouse went viral because of their Michigan football promotion. They offered 1% off for every point the Wolverines scored over Rutgers. Good thing they capped the deal at 50%, because they Wolverines won 78-0. This week, everyone has been clamoring for half-price steaks, so reservations have been hard to come by. Fortunately, the restaurant’s manager was able to squeeze in a ressie for Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and his wife.
