The One Where They Nixed Chip

Today's Rundown

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Les Miles is all smiles (56-27)The LSU Tigers handily beat the Texas Tech Red Raiders yesterday in the Texas Bowl.  The Tigers let RB Leonard Fournette do what he does best, which was run with the ball and no one on Texas Tech could stop him.  This was a really rewarding victory for LSU Head Coach Les Miles.  Just a few weeks ago, LSU awkwardly let rumors circulate that they wouldn’t renew Miles’s contract for 2016, but then after lots of public outcry they said “J/K” and announced that he would return as head coach.  Miles has said that things have “dissipated comfortably."  Awwwkward.

What do you do when you see a bear again?  Hide?  (49-38)The Baylor Bears defeated the UNC Tar Heels, despite being be down to their 3rd string QB Chris Johnson and missing stars WR Corey Coleman and RB Shock Linwood. The Bears broke the college football postseason record with 645 rushing yards, in large part thanks to RB Johnny Jefferson, who ran for 299 yards, more than the whole UNC team put together.

Spotlight on Former Eagles Head Coach Chip Kelly

Yesterday evening, the Philadelphia Eagles issued a press release that they had “released” their Head Coach of three years, Chip Kelly. The news surprised even Eagles players, who found out the decision with the rest of us.

Aww, how come?  Kelly was hired three years ago, after successfully coaching college football at Oregon for four years.  He initially made some big strides with the Eagles, getting them to play hurry-up offense (quick offensive plays without huddles in between, to catch the defense off-guard), much like he did at Oregon.  But this season, he asked Owner Jeffrey Lurie for more control with personnel decisions, and things started taking a turn for the worse.  Kelly made a series of bad trades, and this season the Eagles are at a 6-9 record with no hope of making the playoffs.

Murmurs and rampant speculation.  Some speculate that Kelly may be an attractive fit for the Tennessee Titans, who also fired their Head Coach earlier this year.  The Titans have QB Marcus Mariota, whom Kelly recruited to Oregon and plays just his speed and style of offense. Kelly reportedly tried to trade for Mariota at the beginning of this year, but the deal was too rich for his blood.  Now, there is a chance Kelly and Mariota could make sweet music together in Nashville. Aww.

Um isn’t there still one more week of the season?  Eagles Offensive Coordinator Pat Shurmer has been named interim head coach for the final Eagles game against the Giants this Sunday.  Eagles Owner Lurie will hold a press conference with additional details today at noon, so stay tuned for updates.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

I just added one bowl game to my Wolfpack… The NC State Wolfpack will take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs today in the Belk Bowl.  This will be the last game for both team’s senior QBs.  Each team is looking for a win, but it would definitely mean a lot to NC State.  The Wolfpack really turned things around in the past two years, going from winning only 3 games in 2013 to 8 wins last season.  They will have a tough opponent in the Bulldogs QB Dak Prescott who has won the Conerly Trophy twice.  The Conerly Trophy is given to the best college football player in Mississippi each year.  Only one other player has won it twice—NY Giants QB Eli Manning, so Prescott is in good company.

It’s not you, it’s me.  Today the Texas A&M Aggies will play the Louisville Cardinals in the Music City Bowl.  This looked like it would be a pretty close and interesting matchup, but earlier this week Texas A&M’s first and second string QBs both decided to transfer away to other schools for “personal reasons.”  Mmhmm.  There is speculation that there were trust issues between the QBs and the offensive coaching staff, which doesn’t bode well for the Aggies next season.  Now, third string QB Jake Hubenak will make his first college football start, in today’s bowl game.  The Aggies are also notoriously bad at running the ball, so this is a big weight that rests on Hubenak’s shiny new shoulders.

You fired who? And who? And who? And who?  The USC Trojans will play the Wisconsin Badgers today in the Holiday Bowl.  The Trojans just went through some pretty serious personnel changes, when Head Coach Clay Helton fired his defensive coordinator, defensive line coach, defensive backs coach, and offensive line coach.  Ouch!  They will be facing Wisconsin, which has the #1 scoring defense in the country.  That said, the Badgers have not won against a team with a winning record this season, so its 9-3 record looks slightly less impressive.
