Football 101

The Basics

Football is played by two teams of 11 players each, on a 100-yard field.  The team with the most points at the end of the four 15-minute quarters wins.  Each team scores points in primarily one of two ways: (1) a touchdown, which is worth 6 points and is achieved by advancing the ball into the other team’s end zone; or (2) a field goal, which is worth 3 points and is achieved by kicking the ball through the other team’s goal posts.  There are a couple additional ways to score points, but we'll get into those in "The Flow of the Game."
